History of shapewear

The first ever corset, the original type of shapewear dates back to somewhere in the 16th century and would typically be made from leather or cotton. With stiff “ribs” to give shape to the mid section of the body as well as reduce its size, they were apparently very uncomfortable garments and it wasn’t unknown for “ladies” to faint when they were tied just a wee bit too tight.

From around 1910 the girdle took over from the corset as the preferred garment to restrict and reshape the female form. These were more flexible that the corsets being made from a softer material and were soon the favourite undergarment and the most fashionable with the added advantage of being able to attach stockings to the inbuilt garter belts.

These started going out of fashion around the same time that stockings were being replaced by pantyhose and women were looking for a more modern look and feel for their undergarments.

Now the shapewear garments have had a makeover and are no longer the restrictive garments that they used to be. Thanks to research and changes to technology modern day shapewear is a pleasure to wear and much more gentle on the wearer.
